Chapter 18

Her blended ice mocha was simply a lukewarm mocha by the time they reached Graphomancy. “Yay. Watered down eight-dollar espresso drink,” Jen said.

Lil didn’t respond. She walked in and immediately down the hall. Jen heard a thunk and the sound of fans. After a moment, a drift of less-hot air circled the waiting area. There was nothing like the power of Art Deco air cooling.

Jen headed into the office. She’d bought a wimpy little fan at the Thrift and Drift. For the most part, it only blew papers off her worktable. Cooling was a little out of the question today.

More script, she thought. She ruled out some lines on the sketchbook. With a steady hand, she drew out an elongated word: hot. This was followed up by letters with more flow: sweaty. Then, a longer word: miserable. She looked over the last one, considering all the flourishes she could make with the descenders of the B and the L. Jen was fleshing them out when Lil walked in.

“I’m not sure what to do,” Lil said.

Jen looked up. She’d never heard that tone from Lil. “Well, I guess we still solve the case, right?”

“That guy makes people disappear.”

“Mostly people who can’t defend themselves,” Jen offered.

“Joseph can defend himself. He’s got a family, a whole organization, who trade in and work with weapons. But this guy managed to disappear him without any trouble at all.”

Jen tried to dispel the icy terror freezing her insides. “Well, we’ve got people. We’ve got Dulce—she’s in law enforcement. Andy knows a ton about the local cops. Plus, I’m sure if we asked, we could get all the gangster back-up we needed.”

“I’m sure we could, too,” Lil said. “Maria will give us what we want. Unfortunately, if we give Maria what we know, a strong measure of retaliation would follow.”

“Would we consider that a bad thing?” Jen said. “As opposed to being disappeared?”

“We might not, if we knew for sure. If we could prove it. But we can’t. It’s still all speculation. There’s no way I’d bring that down on an innocent man. We have to find something concrete. If a bad reputation was a reason for retribution, I’d be in a world of hurt myself. As much as it’s going to cost me, monetarily, physically, emotionally and spiritually, we need to figure out a spell. If we can find Joseph, he can identify his abductor himself.”

“But you said the spell wasn’t a sure thing,” Jen said.

“What else do we have going?” Lil said. “There’s a video that’s inconclusive. There’s a witness who’s a criminal himself. There’s a victim, potential victim I should say, that’s out of his freaking mind.”

Jen tapped her pencil eraser on her pad. “Melo did do the finger gun thing at us.”

“There we go. Something we can proudly hand to the district attorney. We didn’t even get a video of him doing it. Hell, he could do that to everybody.”

“Well, he is kinda douchey,” Jen agreed. “He probably does.”

“For right now, I’ll try to follow up on arrest reports, which means Andy.
